A nipple shield may be suggested for a variety of reasons and when other options have not worked to fix the nipple or attachment problem.
A nipple shield is usually only used once your milk supply has increased in amount and changed from colostrum to mature milk. This usually happens 2 to 5 days after the birth. In most cases, you only need to use a nipple shield for a short time.
Breastfeeding experts have different opinions about nipple shields and when/if they should be tried. Some of the reasons for using them include:
sore, damaged nipples
attachment issues (e.g. flat or inverted nipples, baby having mouth variations such as a high palate or because of being premature)
a baby learning to feed at the breast after using a bottle.
How do I use the MammaBump nipple shields?
Before the first use, wash the MammaBump nipple shield with hot soapy water and sanitize it. Make sure your breast is clean and dry, then moisten the shield’s edges with lukewarm water to help it stay in place.
Gently flip the shield inside out and smooth it onto your breast so your nipple fits snugly into the tip. Ensure the shield is secure, with your nipple extending into the teat.
Express a little milk into the shield’s tip to encourage your baby to latch. As your baby feeds, milk will flow continuously into the extended teat.
How do I clean the MammaBump nipple shields?
You don’t need to sterilise a nipple shield. With clean hands, just rinse it in cold water after use. Then wash it in hot soapy water and rinse under hot running water. Drain, dry (e.g. with paper towel) and store in a covered container that has been cleaned in the same way.

Don’t let other brand nipple shields turn you off your breastfeeding journey. I was using the Mandela brand one that was given me by a lactation expert. I was still getting nipple blisters & extreme pain. Thankgod I persisted & ordered these in week 3. They have changed my life, I can now breastfeed on the go & am not in despair wasting hours stuck at home pumping. I was getting quite desperate and feeling like giving up. So happy these work! They don’t give me blisters, the teat isn’t as long, the carry case is great for travel. The only thing I would change with nipple shields in general is that they should be tinted a slight colour (pink), cannot tell you how many times I have misplaced them!

Great shields once well attached with some hand holding. I wish they were not partial coverage but full circle around the areola.

The shape is great. Similar to a bottle nipple. Much better than the most popular ones.

Struggling to get baby off shields. These are much smaller and don't hold as much milk at the end which is my frustration with other brands, it makes so much mess when baby pulls them off! These stick on much better and feel way more natural.

These really worked for me, he was clamping down and not latching on right and wow did it hurt, these work nice to protect the nipple while it heals and makes it possible to nurse them after sore nipples.

Bought these because my 6 month old is cutting teeth and has been using my nipples as chew toys. Put them on and now i can barely feel it when the baby clamps down. I love these. Wish I had gotten them sooner.

Nipple shields fit as expected but I love the case the most! Makes it so nice to pack them in the diaper bag and go!

Works great so far. I started with another brand first, and decided to try this one. My son latches much better to this shield. Makes for a much happier baby and mama. Good quality and good price.

I love the case it is the best ever! I always had to put my nipple shields into napkins or burp clothes and still had to clean them before use now I know they are good to go!

Worked well with our newborn in terms of latching and reducing breastfeeding pain. They stick well and don't seem to let air in when baby is feeding.

On day 4 my baby could not latch on. I got the nipple shields and they were a lifesaver. Now he latches on every time. Thank you so much for making these!

Godsend. These have allowed me to breast feed my baby. She has a very tiny mouth and struggled to gets a good latch, causing me so much pain.
I have tried Medela and MAM brand shields and these are my favourite. The holes are small and introduce less air into babies belly. They suction well and the case is well made.
If your struggling with pain and getting a good latch go for these.
